Food

Vienna, and Austria in general, follows the dietary model of the Northern countries. The Viennese cuisine’s main characteristics are the sauces and onion garnishes, while meat and soups have leading roles. Of course, at the top of the local cuisine we find the famous Viennese schnitzel. Even though it is prepared in a completely unhealthy way (it is fried in butter), it steals the show with its wonderful/crispy flavor.

In Vienna you will find many restaurants and traditional taverns to dine in, with prices for all budgets. For a full meal with wine you will pay 30-40€/person, while without wine it will cost 20-30€/person. It is also worth mentioning that the city loves vegetarians, as in every menu there are options for their tastes. If you look for cheap and fast food you will come across stands with sausages and food trucks with kebabs. Do not pass them by…The food is of good quality and quite filling. Finally, do not miss out on trying some of the most well-known dishes and desserts, such as Schnitzel, the traditional sandwich Leberkäs-Semmel (thanks Irene),  Pork with caramelized onions, Sausages with Dijon mustard, Viennese goulash, apple Strudel, Sachertorte and Kaiserschmarrn.

Ribs of Vienna

If you are in the mood for some ribs or some other kind of meat, then we have for you the best place in the Vienna (and beyond). It is located close to the square of St. Stephen Cathedral and housed in an underground space, dominated by the wooden element. The Ribs of Vienna has a great variety of mouth-watering ribs, which stand out both because of their taste and their size, as they are as long as 1 meter per serving! The service and prices are good, while in order to be certain that you will get a table, you must have made reservations at least one week in advance. Highly Recommended (H)

We recommend you to try: Everything!

Wurst

Wurst time! When you hear about street food in Austria and Germany, your mind automatically goes to sausages…Understandable, as it is their most popular delicacy. We tried the two most famous stands in Vienna and present them to you.

Wurst Tip: Start eating the part of the sausage that is sticking out and, at the same time, bite the underside, where all the bread is. This way you will not just be eating sausage at the start and then end up throwing away the bread.

a) Bitzinger Wurstelstand Albertina

The line next to the Albertina museum is not for the museum, but for the most delicious sausage in the city. The grill is always on, the hot dogs, fries and beers are constantly moving, while the sausage flavors of curry, chili, spicy and traditional, satisfy the palate of any hungry visitor. Make sure you accompany them with the unique Dijon mustard. Recommended (R)

Our suggestion: Hot dog with traditional sausage

Our order: 1 Hot dog with spicy sausage, 1 Hot dog with traditional sausage, 1 bottle of water. Total cost: 12.5€

Total score: 8.2

b) Wurstelstand am Hohen Markt

We found the second stand next to the Ankeruhr clock and its specialty is cut sausages. If you are hungry, then a Currywurst will fill the void! We must point out that service in this particular stand is not the best, while flavors are adequate (but nothing special). Good Choice (G)

Our suggestion: the Currywurst.

Our order: 1 Currywurst, 1 sausage with cheese, 2 slices of bread. Total cost: 8€

Total score: 7.3

Maxing Stuberl

If you want to dine in a traditional Viennese tavern in the company of locals, then stroll down to the Schönbrunn Palace. There you will find Maxing Stuberl, a small wooden shop that does not claim laurels of quality and service, but is nonetheless a good choice for you to try the traditional Viennese cuisine. You should be armed with a lot of patience, though, as the serving time for every dish starts at 30 minutes and might be as long as 1 hour! It is definitely not the cleanest restaurant in Vienna, yet it is worth visiting if you want to escape the tourist paths.  Good Choice (G)

We recommend you to try: the Pork with caramelized onions.

Our order: 1 Pork with caramelized onions, 1 Chicken filets, 1 traditional Kaiserschmarren dessert, 2 local beers. Total cost: 42€.

Schank Zum Reichsapfel

If you want to get away from the tourist-occupied center and dine like a Viennese, we have one more suggestion for you, only this time you will have to move upwards! The Schank Zum Reichsapfel is a traditional restaurant, on the north side of Vienna, and offers tasteful dishes in a clean and well-kept space. The variety might not be that great, but the service and flavors will leave you satisfied.  Good Choice (G)

We recommend you to try: the braised Pork.

Our order: 1 Roast Beef with pear, 1 oven-braised pork, 1 traditional draft beer, 1 traditional bottled beer. Total cost: 27.5€.

Beim Hofmeister

It is a family restaurant in the heart of Vienna, pretty close to the square of St. Stephen Cathedral. Its interior space is quite long and indifferent, while the tastes of the dishes are okay, without anything special. The two traits that win over the visitors of Beim Hofmeister are the satisfying portions and reasonable prices, while the dessert follows the overall mediocre impression of the restaurant.  Good Choice (G)

We recommend you to try: the classic Viennese Schnitzel.

Our order: 1 Viennese Schnitzel, 1 Viennese Goulash, 1 Sachertorte, 2 draft beers. Total cost: 39€.

Breakfast

Alois Daniel Bakery

The best breakfast in Vienna (and one of the best that we have ever tasted) is housed in a modern and bright space, on the ground floor of the Daniel Hotel. It is located close to the Belvedere Palace and offers an excellent tasting experience so you start your day in the best possible way. In the Alois Daniel Bakery’s rich buffet you will find options ranging from milk with cereal and oatmeal to home-made omelets and salmon sandwiches. And the most important part? Everything is as fresh as it gets! Also, we should highlight that the service and attitude of the staff is totally friendly, while the price* corresponds perfectly with everything offered. Highly Recommended (H)

*On weekends the price is increased by 2€/person

We recommend you to try: everything on their rich Buffet.

Felzl Backerei Cafe

The Felzl Bäckerei Cafe is a bakery chain with only four stores in Vienna. Their style is different than the one of Anker’s, as both their quality and setup of the stores are noticeably higher. This, of course, results in prices being increased. Nevertheless, the high quality products, warmth and good service make them a worthwhile option for breakfast.  Recommended (R)

We recommend you to try: the Salmon sandwich.

Ullmann’s Zuckerbackerei

If you would like to enjoy your breakfast in an original Viennese hangout, then the Ullmann’s Zuckerbäckerei, on the north side of Vienna, is a good choice. In a delightfully decorated space you have the chance to taste some of the breakfast options recommended on the menu or create your own*. Tastes are satisfying, portions are small, while the staff is polite and speak English fluently. Important: On weekdays breakfast is served until 11:00 and on weekends until 14:00.  Good Choice (G)

*Ask for the cakes of the day and pick the best one.

We recommend you to try: the exquisite organic Tea.

Anker

The Anker is the most well-known chain of bakeries in Vienna, with more than 110 stores around the city. They offer a vast variety of breakfast delicacies, with satisfying flavors and low prices. The chain’s greatest disadvantage is the lack of politeness and good service, a fact that spoils their otherwise good image. Finally, you should know that some of the stores are only take-away.  Good Choice (G)

We recommend you to try: the Croissant with chestnut filling.

Our order: 1 Schnitzel sandwich, 1 chocolate Doughnut, 1 Croissant with chestnut filling, 1 Croissant with chocolate cover and filling, 1 Cappuccino. Total cost: 10.5€
