Vienna, and Austria in general, follows the dietary model of the Northern countries. The Viennese cuisine’s main characteristics are the sauces and onion garnishes, while meat and soups have leading roles. Of course, at the top of the local cuisine we find the famous Viennese schnitzel. Even though it is prepared in a completely unhealthy way (it is fried in butter), it steals the show with its wonderful/crispy flavor.
In Vienna you will find many restaurants and traditional taverns to dine in, with prices for all budgets. For a full meal with wine you will pay 30-40€/person, while without wine it will cost 20-30€/person. It is also worth mentioning that the city loves vegetarians, as in every menu there are options for their tastes. If you look for cheap and fast food you will come across stands with sausages and food trucks with kebabs. Do not pass them by…The food is of good quality and quite filling. Finally, do not miss out on trying some of the most well-known dishes and desserts, such as Schnitzel, the traditional sandwich Leberkäs-Semmel (thanks Irene), Pork with caramelized onions, Sausages with Dijon mustard, Viennese goulash, apple Strudel, Sachertorte and Kaiserschmarrn.
