Food

Greece means good food, sun and the sea. In this section, though, we are going to talk only about the first one, the one that Elena loves! It may be true that the Greek cuisine is directly connected to the Mediterranean; however it contains flavor characteristics from the East. So, in it you will find local meats (pork, beef, chicken, goat, lamb and buffalo), soups (lentil, chickpea, bean etc.), organic vegetables, as well as all kinds of fish, thanks to Greece’s endless seas. The dishes, based on products from the fertile Greek land, manage to captivate even the most demanding of palates (always with the help of spices).

Crete the “Levendogenna” (the one who bears brave men) could include in its assets nothing less than delicious dishes, which are enriched with extra virgin olive oil and herbs of the Cretan land. Food in Chania will not be an issue, as there are hundreds of choices to try the local cuisine. However, large numbers of tourists have created the need for fast food, like burgers, sandwiches and crepes. Most Cretans keep honoring the local cuisine, while always enjoying their meal accompanied by some raki, select appetizers and, of course, their company. Follow the steps of the locals and try kaltsounia with greens or sweet mizithra (lihnarakia), hohlioi mpourmpouristoi (steamed snails with herbs), tsigariasto with staka (smoked wild goat with staka cheese), apaki (pork), the authentic dakos and their exquisite raki. Prices, even during the tourist high season, are at reasonable levels. For an all-inclusive meal with wine or raki you will have to pay 15-25€ per person.

Note: We have to underline that you will find authentic Cretan food in various villages of the Chania district, as inside the city most restaurants are tourist-oriented and do not focus that much on quality (except for only a few exceptions).

The best food in the Peloponnese

It is known that the Greek cuisine is one of the best in the world, but with the addition of products from the fertile land of the Peloponnese, the result is at whole new high levels. The servings at most restaurants are generous, flavors are tasty and the cost is pretty reasonable. For a two-person meal with wine you will pay 35-45€, a price that more than accurately reflects everything you will experience and taste at a tavern.

In every area of the Peloponnese you will find local products, which are worth trying as well as getting some to-go. In Nafplio you will taste the gkogkes of Argolis, in Leonidio the well-known tsakonian eggplants, in Monemvasia the famous Malvazia wine and delicious oranges, in Mani the lalagkia, sygklino and sour trahanas, in Kalamata the diples and best olive oil in the world and in Central/mountainous Peloponnese the graviera cheeses, local pasta, spoon sweets and excellent game stew (birds or wild meat)!

Food in the Peloponnese has this something special that will make you return to these lands! Dishes that are tasty, with top quality materials, which are “christened” in extra virgin olive oil, will offer your palate some of the most delicious experiences you have ever had!

The restaurants with the best food in the Peloponnese…

And now we come to Thessaloniki, a city that reflects its intense eroticism, even in food. The city provides quite the choices, covering every visitor’s (or non-visitor’s) preference and budget. Among them, you will find restaurants, taverns and traditional “tsipouradika”, which serve meat, tasty appetizers, salads, as well as a lot of vegetarian dishes. Of course, fish could not be missing from the menu, with classic and gourmet fish-taverns competing with each other. Finally, for those that prefer something to go, the city seems ideal, as gyros restaurants/sandwich shops offer a variety of inexpensive choices and they are everywhere. An average price for you to dine at a restaurant/tavern is 15-20€ per person without wine and 25-30€ with wine. For a fast-food meal, on the other hand, you will pay 3-4€ per person with the soft drink! It is worth mentioning that tipping is a gesture that is greatly appreciated by the waiting/service staff. Do not leave without trying the prominent bougatsa of Thessaloniki, the famous koulouri, Smyrneika soutzoukakia, fine appetizers (at tsipouradika) and the hard-to-find Panorama Trigona (Triangles)! Enjoy..

The villages of Zagori are a key destination for foodies, fans of meat and skewers! However, vegetarians will also find lots of options to fill their bellies…as the traditional Zagorian pies, mushrooms, greens and vegetables cannot go unnoticed. Fast food is an expression strange to this area, which is self-sufficient and relies solely on everything the land has to offer. In the complex’s 47 villages, you will find every kind of meat, cooked in every possible way. Also, due to the cold weather, for most of the year’s months, they love having soups with meat, legumes, as well as vegetables. In order to enjoy a Zagorian lunch or dinner, prefer to visit one of the many taverns. Prices in most of them are reasonable and the dishes’ quality is more than good. Finally, don’t miss out on a full local breakfast, in which all of the products come from the area’s land and animals, as well as the lamb chops from pure local meat.

Where to eat in Athens

Food in Athens is a matter that will not give you a hard time at all, as there are more than 5,000 restaurants, taverns, fast food stores, bakeries and take-away stations! There is a quite wide range of options, while during the last few years the scene of the city has been enriched with various new cuisines, which daily gain big fans. But the city also loves vegetarians, as apart from Vege-restaurants, the other restaurants have also adjusted their menus in order to satisfy this group. For a full meal with wholesale wine you will pay 16-20€ per person, while for a fast food sin around 2-3€. Do not leave Athens without having tried the amazing meats, fish (from the clean waters of the Mediterranean), the horiatiki (village) salad (especially in the summer), the authentic taramosalata, the Greek feta cheese and, of course, the famous Kamalaki wrapped in pita bread!

Important: a) Quality/traditional flavors you will mainly find in areas such as Agia Paraskevi, Korydallos, Paleo Faliro and Nea Smyrni b) The “taverna” that you will come across everywhere is the Greek folk restaurant that serve exclusively Greek cuisine. The atmosphere in taverns is friendly and the flavors have aspects of the sea, the mountain and the fruitful land of Greece.

The best food in Santorini

Food Santorini

Food in Santorini is a case for “strong” wallets (for the Greek standards)! Prices, however are reasonably higher, as both rent rates and taxes in Santorini are sky high.

Despite the high prices, the island is famous for its good food and quality products of the dishes. In almost all restaurants you will find dishes made with local ingredients and served with imagination and creativity. What you might not be aware of is that a two-person meal costs 60 to 80€ with glasses of wine! Options are countless and you must pick based on mood, location and budget. Vegetarian dishes, a plethora of meat options and, of course, fresh fish are lined up in the restaurants and taverns of the island.

Food Santorini

Do not leave Santorini without having tried its traditional products and dishes! We start off with the famous Cherry Tomatoes of Santorini, the creamy Fava of Santorini and the delicious domatokeftedes (tomato fritters) a.k.a. “pseftokeftedes” (“fake fritters”). The flavorsome caper, the small white eggplants, the chlorotyri (fresh cheese) and fresh fish from the Aegean are accompanied by the wonderful Santorinian wines from PDO varieties.

Some of the local dishes are the Santorinian salad with cherry tomatoes, fresh cheese, rusks and caper, the skordomakarona (garlic pasta) and the Atherinopita (sand smelt pie) with sand smelts, flour and onions fried. In more sophisticated places you will also find kselouristos bakaliaros (cod fish), which is eaten (uncooked) in small pieces accompanied by tomato salad, as well as the traditional Easter dessert, the Meletinia or Melitinia, which resemble the Cretan skaltsounia.

Mini Tips: a) If you want to find a table, you must make reservations (any day during high season and Friday & weekends the rest of the year) b) You will find the best and most economical taverns outside of Oia and Thera. c) It will be hard to find a main dish that costs less than 17€!

Spiliaraki

Spiliaraki is a hospitable coffee house in a small village of Chania, the quaint Topolia. The shop offers tasty traditional dishes, prepared with love and high quality materials that Panagiotis and his father produce. It is one of the very few shops in Greece that all ingredients come from their house (from the meat to the vegetables to honey and raki). You could not possibly leave out its traditional exterior space, reggae touches and excellent view. And as far as prices go, they are highly reasonable. The small tavern is a great choice for you to taste genuine Cretan flavors away from the tourist locations. You will find it on the way to Elafonisi…! Highly Recommended (H)

Also, the variety and size of the servings will satisfy even the most demanding customer! You should keep in mind that Nafplio is a difficult town when it comes to food, as most taverns, which are located in the old town, serve expensive dishes, mediocre in quality and taste.

Meraklikia tou Boureksi

Moving forward with the good choices we made in Chania, we wound up in the small tavern “Meraklikia tou Boureksi”. Its small space predisposes you for the friendly environment. This, of course, gets easier with the help of mr. Manolis, who is the synonym of Cretan hospitality. With traditional, quality dishes and clean drinks, this place is a great choice for the tourist-oriented city of Chania. Choices may be limited, but they are delicious and satisfying in size. It is worth getting outside of the wonderful old town in order to taste a genuine Cretan meal. Highly Recommended (H)

The dishes served might sound familiar, yet they surprise with the interesting combinations of ingredients and the excellent raw materials, from all over Greece. It is also worth highlighting that everything is hand-made, from broths, marmalades, sauces, dips, creams, aromatic butters, even the home-made ketchup that accompanies burgers! At the shop you will taste original gkogkes of Argolis, which you can “accompany” with some lamb chops and lots of wine!

Our suggestion: the traditional gkogkes of Argolis!

Halaro

Halaro is, probably, the finest restaurant in the city. Its menu provides the chance for endless combinations that satisfy every taste, even the vegetarians. The dishes surpass any expectations with their taste, as well as with their quality, while service is average. Do not get carried away and order lots of things, because portions are pretty big and they will go to waste. And do not worry about prices; they are totally reasonable for the quantity and quality of the dishes. Anyone who wishes to have a high quality meal should not pass it by. Reservations are necessary on weekends and holidays. Highly Recommended (H)

Agioli (Tavern-Restaurant)

Agioli is an elegant restaurant that is divided in two floors and has a direct view of the sea. On the ground floor (tavern-pub) you will find local flavors of the Greek cuisine, while at the first floor (restaurant) you will meet more sophisticated flavors! The menu does not include a wide variety, but its dishes of choice are well cooked, well-presented and cover most gastronomic appetites. The staff is pleasant and attentive, while prices are at high levels. Good Choice (G)

Street – Fast Food

Beloi tavern: Vitsa

The Beloi tavern is not very popular with travelers, but it is a good solution for a meal, if you are in the area of Vitsa. The owner has an animal unit, so it makes perfect sense that meat is the star of the menu! Prices are reasonable and the flavors and presentation of the dishes are sufficient, as is the service. Furthermore, the variety of options, as well as the dishes’ portions, is good enough. It is not recommended for vegetarians or those looking for unique flavors. It is a great place to eat some meat without great cost and…requirements. Good Choice (G)
