Food

In the city of Budapest, food is a subject that you should never worry about, as it offers a great variety of choices for all tastes and budgets. You can get something to go for a low price, or have a meal in one of the city’s many notable restaurants. Their cuisine is a bit heavy, due to the cold weather that prevails on most days. Nevertheless, it is delicious and extraordinary! Meat lovers will be the most content with Hungarian cuisine, as most of their dishes are based on it! But, recently, many restaurants have started enriching their menus in order to meet their vegetarian customers’ needs. We guarantee that you will find something that suits your taste! Tipping is accustomed in Budapest, so don’t be surprised if it is included in the bill.

Hungarikum Bistro Restaurant

Literally everything in this restaurant (from the food to tables, chairs, tableware and decoration) are pieces of the Hungarian tradition and they serve food of the finest quality in affordable prices. But, as its fame by far exceeds its interior capacity, making reservations is necessary. It was one of our best choices for food while on a trip, so far! Highly Recommended (H)

If you happen to be in Budapest during the Christmas holidays, the many booths that are set up in front of the Basilica and in Vörösmarty Square, will certainly gain a spot…in your stomach! It is a true culinary heaven, full of food and drink options in reasonable prices. You will find sausages (wurst) that come in all sorts of varieties and sizes, cooked meals with meat, onions and other hot viands, fine local liqueurs and the single most delicious gluhwein we ever had! All of these are guaranteed to warm you up during the frozen days and nights of Budapest’s winter. Highly Recommended (H)

This Italian restaurant is a great place to have a meal in the city and is located next to the Continental Hotel. They offer a variety of tasty dishes, satisfying in both quality and quantity. The whole place is very clean and quaint and the staff is all very polite and willing to help and make you feel comfortable. It is almost always full, so you should probably book a table. Also, the fact that the prices are so reasonable makes it a great choice for any budget. Recommended (R)

Lugas Restaurant

Lugas restaurant, located right behind the Basilica, is another great place for you to enjoy some original Hungarian cuisine. It’s a fairly small space with its decoration reminding of a Mediterranean cellar. You can enjoy your meal sitting in one of the traditional tables or in a comfy couch, under the grapevine. Service is great and the food is delicious and totally worth the money (it won’t cost you much, anyway)! But bear in mind that you should probably book a table, as the restaurant is small and usually full, so you might not find a table (unless you’re lucky). It is also a great option for vegetarians. Breakfast

Amber’s French Bakery & Cafe

This enticing bakery-café, located near the Great Market Hall, cannot go unnoticed! You can kick start your day with an appetizing breakfast in a very good price. Inside the shop, the wooden element in the decoration, along with the smell of freshly baked goods, steal the show and set a homely tone. Its only downside is that service was slow and dull as a sloth and the staff was a bit rude as well! There are a lot of tables both inside and outside the store for you to sit and relish your breakfast, no matter the season! Recommended (R) (putting aside the staff’s overall attitude)

We recommend you to try: The croissant with forest fruits

Our order: 1 Fougasse with bacon and mozzarella, 1 Croissant with forest fruits, 1 Hot chocolate, 1 Cappuccino, 1 Raspberry éclair, 1 Mille-feuille. Total cost: 13€.

Bite

Riding our bikes down the road from the Zoo to Margaret Island, we discovered Bite. A warm and friendly bakery that offers great service and tons of different breakfast delicacies and snacks! You can take your breakfast to go or enjoy it in the store (choose the delightfully decorated first floor). The bakery’s signature product is their freshly baked pretzels, and it is also known for its delish cinnamon rolls! The heavenly smells, as well as the great variety, will not make it easy on you to decide on the most…delicious choice! Recommended (R)
