Food

Greece means good food, sun and the sea. In this section, though, we are going to talk only about the first one, the one that Elena loves! It may be true that the Greek cuisine is directly connected to the Mediterranean; however it contains flavor characteristics from the East. So, in it you will find local meats (pork, beef, chicken, goat, lamb and buffalo), soups (lentil, chickpea, bean etc.), organic vegetables, as well as all kinds of fish, thanks to Greece’s endless seas. The dishes, based on products from the fertile Greek land, manage to captivate even the most demanding of palates (always with the help of spices).

Crete the “Levendogenna” (the one who bears brave men) could include in its assets nothing less than delicious dishes, which are enriched with extra virgin olive oil and herbs of the Cretan land. Food in Chania will not be an issue, as there are hundreds of choices to try the local cuisine. However, large numbers of tourists have created the need for fast food, like burgers, sandwiches and crepes. Most Cretans keep honoring the local cuisine, while always enjoying their meal accompanied by some raki, select appetizers and, of course, their company. Follow the steps of the locals and try kaltsounia with greens or sweet mizithra (lihnarakia), hohlioi mpourmpouristoi (steamed snails with herbs), tsigariasto with staka (smoked wild goat with staka cheese), apaki (pork), the authentic dakos and their exquisite raki. Prices, even during the tourist high season, are at reasonable levels. For an all-inclusive meal with wine or raki you will have to pay 15-25€ per person.

Note: We have to underline that you will find authentic Cretan food in various villages of the Chania district, as inside the city most restaurants are tourist-oriented and do not focus that much on quality (except for only a few exceptions).

Spiliaraki

Spiliaraki is a hospitable coffee house in a small village of Chania, the quaint Topolia. The shop offers tasty traditional dishes, prepared with love and high quality materials that Panagiotis and his father produce. It is one of the very few shops in Greece that all ingredients come from their house (from the meat to the vegetables to honey and raki). You could not possibly leave out its traditional exterior space, reggae touches and excellent view. And as far as prices go, they are highly reasonable. The small tavern is a great choice for you to taste genuine Cretan flavors away from the tourist locations. You will find it on the way to Elafonisi…! Highly Recommended (H)

Our suggestion: everything…and the amazing dessert “Zoumeri”.

Meraklikia tou Boureksi

Moving forward with the good choices we made in Chania, we wound up in the small tavern “Meraklikia tou Boureksi”. Its small space predisposes you for the friendly environment. This, of course, gets easier with the help of mr. Manolis, who is the synonym of Cretan hospitality. With traditional, quality dishes and clean drinks, this place is a great choice for the tourist-oriented city of Chania. Choices may be limited, but they are delicious and satisfying in size. It is worth getting outside of the wonderful old town in order to taste a genuine Cretan meal. Highly Recommended (H)

Our suggestion: the eggplants with minced meat.
Our order: 1 Dakos, 1 Lamb “tsigariasto”, 1 Eggplants with minced meat, 2 Beers. Total cost: 28€.

Thealassa

Thealassa has a magical view of the harbor, the lighthouse and part of the old town, attesting to its clever name! It is on the roof of the Pallas multi-space and offers delicious food. The dishes are well-prepared and rich in flavor, the staff is willing to attain and the scenery looks like it came out of a fairytale (especially during sunset). The prices may be a bit high, but the view and the tasty flavors will compensate you to the fullest. The restaurant has a limited number of tables, so you should book one early. (It opens in mid-June.) Highly Recommended (H)

Ginger Concept

Ginger Concept is a smart alternative choice to spend a nice evening in the old town, away from the tourist crowds. In this establishment you will not taste Cretan cuisine, but international flavors, which are made with first quality ingredients. Its extremely well-kept interior and exterior space, in combination with the amazing dishes and the staff’s politeness will make you love it at first sight. Prices may be a little pinched, but you will forget about it as soon as you taste dishes like Parmesan Pizza with asparaguses and truffle oil! The restaurant is also a very good choice for the first cocktail of the evening. Highly Recommended (H)

Aposperida

In a village (Paleochora) that in the summer becomes a major tourist spot and 90% of the restaurants serve low quality food, we have the solution by the name of Aposperida. The small tavern is located outside of the center, “in a house’s backyard”, and serves food that remind the ones of our grandma, while prices are at reasonable levels. If you do not want to eat “the view”, but Cretan food without fanfare, then Aposperida is the best choice. The only complaint that someone might have is the slow service, and the dishes’ sloppy style. Recommended (R)

Our suggestion: dishes from the Cretan cuisine.
Our order: 1 “Tsigariasto” lamb, 1 Rabbit stew, 1 Sfakian pie, 1 Hohlioi Mpourmpouristoi & 1 Beer. Total cost: 27€.

Lucerna

The Cretan cooking lesson ends with a feast with all the goods that you have prepared along with the chef Joseph Apostolakis. Apart from the useful information and the practice around the Cretan cuisine, you will have the chance to dine at the Lucerna hotel. The menu is rich as it has appetizers, two main courses, dessert and plenty of wine-raki. And all of this with a view of the beautiful city of Chania. Chef Apostolakis’ dishes need no comment…Put on the aprons and grab the forks.

Our suggestion: the entire Menu.
Our order: 1 Tzatziki, 1 Hortokalitsouna, 1 Horiatiki salad, 1 Tsigariasto lamb, 1 Chicken with yoghurt sauce, 1 dessert, Wine and Raki. Total cost: 45€/person —> including the lesson.

Royal Sun Restaurant

If you would like to dine with the entire city of Chania at your feet, then we have the ideal place for you. The restaurant of the Royal Sun hotel gives everyone the chance to enjoy a meal with a pretty view of the city and the Cretan Sea. The choices may be limited and the flavors might not have the Cretan cuisine as a basic trait, but the view and the huge portions will satisfy you completely. The dishes’ quality is also satisfactory, as well as the prices and service. Finally, you should know that almost all the tables on the balcony come with a view, while to reach it you will need a means of transport. Recommended (R)

Our suggestion: the huge schnitzel a la crème.

Drosostalia

During our excursion to Apokoronas, we discovered the tavern Drosostalia, in Armenoi village. The delicious dishes, huge portions and friendly service are a few of the tavern’s positive traits, while variety is not included in the restaurant’s assets. With prices being quite low and portions very filling, the 30-minute distance from Chania is not a problem for you to enjoy a meal, under the shade of the plane trees. Tip: Do not order a lot of dishes, because you will probably not be able to eat even half of them…The horiatiki salad can be eaten by four people as a main dish! Recommended (R)

Our suggestion: the pork Steak (Godzilla).

Arismari

The excursion to the villages of Apokoronas opens the appetite for some afternoon raki. On your way you will find the tavern Arismari in the village of Gavalohori, where you can make a stop to recharge your batteries. In a charming space, under the once proud plane tree, you have the chance to drink some ice-cold raki, accompanied by Cretan appetizers and the lovely company of the store’s mascot, who is none other than the owner’s lovable dog. Recommended (R)

Zaharias

Our next culinary stop was at the village of Falassarna and the restaurant of Zaharias. After the gorgeous sunset at the beach, it was time for a good dinner at this tavern. Zaharias has a variety of dishes, made with products either of their own produce, or bought first hand. They are tastily cooked and served in satisfying portions. Their prices are equally satisfying, as well as the service, while the space is big and colorful! It is worth making a stop for some gamopilafo if you are in the area… Good Choice (G)

Our suggestion: the tasty Gamopilafo.

Koutourouki

Koutourouki is located in one of the many picturesque alleys of the old town. It serves dishes of mediocre quality and quantity, just like most of the taverns that you will find in the old town. Its dishes are indifferent, as well as the materials they use, while the staff is polite. As far as prices are concerned, they are high compared to what is offered. Food in the old town is a difficult case and you will clearly feel the difference if you eat outside of it or even at a village of Chania, where the quality/price ratio increases dramatically. Breakfast

Samaria Hotel Buffet

The amazing Samaria Hotel offers a full breakfast to hotel guests and non-guests alike. In the extremely well-kept breakfast area, as well as by the pool, you have the chance to taste fresh products that will keep you stuffed until the afternoon! The buffet is rich and the products delicious and freshly-baked, while the most exciting part is the Cretan corner. At breakfast you also have the chance to enjoy one or more beverages (coffee, tea, juices) that will be served to you with politeness and attentiveness by its wonderful staff. Even if you are not a guest of the hotel, visit it to try the most complete breakfast in the city. Highly Recommended (H)

Feidias

The store Feidias is located outside of the city center, however it makes for a very good choice to have some quality breakfast. It is housed in a modern and delightfully decorated space and has limited options for breakfast, which are mainly based on egg (omelets, pancakes). But do not miss out on trying its delicious, filling sandwiches. Prices may be higher than the city’s average, but they fully represent the products’ quality. In Feidias bistro everything flows in taste and harmony. Highly Recommended (H)

13 Sweeties & Salties

It is probably the most classic store in Chania to have your breakfast. 13 Sweeties & Salties is located in the city center and inside the wonderfully decorated two-storey shop you will find a variety of choices to start your day. Among the products you will find doughnuts, croissants, kaltsounia, koulouria (sesame breads), pies, sandwiches etc. Flavors and portions are quite good, as well as the prices. But, in the advantages, you should also add the staff’s service, who are attentive and polite. Choose the breakfast delicacies that you like and enjoy them on the stylish first floor. Recommended (R)

Royal Sun Buffet

The breakfast at the Royal Sun Hotel is one of the optional choices, but it is, however, worth trying. Its variety is okay, while the products are mediocre in taste and quality, as they seem to be reheated. What steals the show is the magical panoramic view of the city and the polite staff. Its huge terrace gives everyone the chance to enjoy their breakfast along with the most beautiful view of the city. Good Choice (G)
