Greece means good food, sun and the sea. In this section, though, we are going to talk only about the first one, the one that Elena loves! It may be true that the Greek cuisine is directly connected to the Mediterranean; however it contains flavor characteristics from the East. So, in it you will find local meats (pork, beef, chicken, goat, lamb and buffalo), soups (lentil, chickpea, bean etc.), organic vegetables, as well as all kinds of fish, thanks to Greece’s endless seas. The dishes, based on products from the fertile Greek land, manage to captivate even the most demanding of palates (always with the help of spices).
Crete the “Levendogenna” (the one who bears brave men) could include in its assets nothing less than delicious dishes, which are enriched with extra virgin olive oil and herbs of the Cretan land. Food in Chania will not be an issue, as there are hundreds of choices to try the local cuisine. However, large numbers of tourists have created the need for fast food, like burgers, sandwiches and crepes. Most Cretans keep honoring the local cuisine, while always enjoying their meal accompanied by some raki, select appetizers and, of course, their company. Follow the steps of the locals and try kaltsounia with greens or sweet mizithra (lihnarakia), hohlioi mpourmpouristoi (steamed snails with herbs), tsigariasto with staka (smoked wild goat with staka cheese), apaki (pork), the authentic dakos and their exquisite raki. Prices, even during the tourist high season, are at reasonable levels. For an all-inclusive meal with wine or raki you will have to pay 15-25€ per person.
Note: We have to underline that you will find authentic Cretan food in various villages of the Chania district, as inside the city most restaurants are tourist-oriented and do not focus that much on quality (except for only a few exceptions).
