Food

The best food in the Peloponnese

It is known that the Greek cuisine is one of the best in the world, but with the addition of products from the fertile land of the Peloponnese, the result is at whole new high levels. The servings at most restaurants are generous, flavors are tasty and the cost is pretty reasonable. For a two-person meal with wine you will pay 35-45€, a price that more than accurately reflects everything you will experience and taste at a tavern.

In every area of the Peloponnese you will find local products, which are worth trying as well as getting some to-go. In Nafplio you will taste the gkogkes of Argolis, in Leonidio the well-known tsakonian eggplants, in Monemvasia the famous Malvazia wine and delicious oranges, in Mani the lalagkia, sygklino and sour trahanas, in Kalamata the diples and best olive oil in the world and in Central/mountainous Peloponnese the graviera cheeses, local pasta, spoon sweets and excellent game stew (birds or wild meat)!

Food in the Peloponnese has this something special that will make you return to these lands! Dishes that are tasty, with top quality materials, which are “christened” in extra virgin olive oil, will offer your palate some of the most delicious experiences you have ever had!

The restaurants with the best food in the Peloponnese…

Mezedopoleio Pedalio (Nafplio)

Mezedopoleio Pedalio is located outside of Nafplio’s old town and serves excellent dishes, with a friendly attitude and very reasonable prices. Also, the variety and size of the servings will satisfy even the most demanding customer! You should keep in mind that Nafplio is a difficult town when it comes to food, as most taverns, which are located in the old town, serve expensive dishes, mediocre in quality and taste.

Our suggestion: everything!

Trata (Gythio)

Trata is the exception to the rule that says that taverns/restaurants located right by the sea offer wonderful view but serve food of mediocre quality in very high prices. This tavern gets an A on all three subjects, as their fish is as fresh as it gets (whatever their trawler has caught that day), prices are totally reasonable, while the view and service are excellent.

Our suggestion: the fish of the day!
Cost: €€

Taverna T’ Apomero (Monemvasia)

What is one looking for on their holidays? Sea, quiet and a secluded tavern with good food. Congratulations, you just found it! Especially if the destination has such high tourist traffic, as Monemvasia has, a restaurant like this is a hidden gem! It is right by the sea and has a view of the rock of Monemvasia. Their quality dishes and totally reasonable prices make Taverna T’ Apomero an excellent option for food.

Our suggestion: the fish of the day!
Cost: €€

Grill house Nontas (Methoni)

Grill house Nontas is the best option for food in Methoni. Nontas’ shop is not located on a central spot, so you will mostly see locals hanging out there. Those who visit it will taste some delicious souvlaki, kontosouvli and other meat options in sandwiches or as servings. Prices are pretty low, quality is high and service is quick and polite.

Our suggestion: all the sandwiches!

T’ Alonia (Nafplio)

The tavern T’ Alonia is located in Pyrgiotika, just 15 minutes away from Nafplio. It addresses to the gourmand types, as their servings are pretty big, flavors are delicious and prices pretty low. At the shop you will taste original gkogkes of Argolis, which you can “accompany” with some lamb chops and lots of wine!

Our suggestion: the traditional gkogkes of Argolis!

To Spiti tis Marios (Kalavryta)

To Spiti tis Marios (Mario’s house) is open to welcome everyone that loves good food! The owners and chefs, having lots of experience in the kitchen, prepare everything on their own. It is a point of reference that the menu changes according to the season, while the dishes of the day are the freshest products of each day from their vegetable garden or the local market. The dishes are dressed in a gourmet approach, but have the right size at the right price.

Our suggestion: the dish of the day and the unparalleled beet salad!
Cost: €€€

En Leonidio (Leonidio)

The tavern En Leonidio is located in the town center and serves tasty and quality dishes, limited in variety. Their menu is based on local products and mainly on the tsakonian eggplant, which they use even in pizzas! As a matter of fact, they have set up their menu around the tsakonian eggplant, which they have managed to optimize in terms of taste. Prices are slightly high, service is very good and the environment is beautiful and tasteful.

Our suggestion: Eggplants with sauce cooked in a clay pot!
Cost: €€€

Ou Mplekseis (Zatouna)

Ou Mplekseis (“don’t get in trouble”) is a shop that you look for to get in trouble! It is located in the small village of Zatouna and it is a discovery for anyone looking for shops unknown to most people, with quality, quiet and a pleasant environment. Its small interior space comes at odds with its high-volume dishes. Dishes that are traditional, local, prepared with love and artistry by the owner and his friends.

Our suggestion: its delicious local fennel pie!
Cost: €€€

Taverna Antonis and Poly (Zachlorou)

Taverna Antonis and Poly is located in front of one of the most instagramable spots in the entire Peloponnese, the rails of the odontotos in the village of Zachlorou! The scenery might be taken out of a fairytale, but the shop remains humble, economical and serves the best game in the Peloponnese. You will be licking your fingers for the delicious red sauce and its meat.

Our suggestion: the boar stew!
Cost: €€€

Mavromichaleiko (Areopoli)

Mavromichaleiko is located on the pedestrian walkway of Areopoli and it is one of the first options for locals and visitors of the town of Mani alike. The restaurant is famous for its rooster with noodles (the rooster comes from their henhouse) and its Maniot salad (orange, potato, eggs, onion, olives and cheese spread). Prices are a bit high but they are counterbalanced by large servings and quality materials.

Our suggestion: the boar stew!
Cost: €€€

Taverna Drosopigi (Areopoli)

At the village of Drosopigi, a bit outside Areopoli, we find the homonymous tavern! The traditional Taverna Drosopigi might not be known to the general public, but holds the quality and flavors of the dishes at high levels. The unique view from its balcony, large servings and polite service will satisfy you completely. Do not miss out on trying the traditional Kayanas dish.

Our suggestion: The local Kayanas!
Cost: €€

Fish tavern Diamantis (Gerakas)

The fish tavern Diamantis solely addresses to people who love fish! It is located on the beach of the Greek fjords, i.e. the beach of Gerakas, and its advantages are the very fresh fish, excellent appetizers and reasonable prices. Diamantis will serve you ONLY what he fished out on the same day with his trawler and will recommend the best side-dishes to accompany the fish.

Our suggestion: The fish of the day!
Cost: €€€

Tavern Stemnitsa (Stemnitsa)

The tavern Stemnitsa is what we call food in the village! It is located in the village’s stone-built square and it is a good option for anyone who wants to enjoy food without all the bells and whistles. The dishes are plain, traditional, generous in size and great in taste, while the slow service is papered over by the friendly atmosphere and reasonable prices.

Our suggestion: their lamb chops!
Cost: €€

Gallika Salon de The (Nafplio)

Gallika Salon de The serves breakfast delicacies, in pretty limited variety but amazing, fresh flavors. It is, of course, famous for its authentic French croissants, which are limited in number and are prepared upon order! Make reservations and enjoy one breakfast with French scent.

Our suggestion: Their amazing French croissants!

Ta Nisia tis Panayias (Elafonissos)

Food in Elafonissos is a small problem, as options are limited and mediocre in quality. But if you want to have a pleasant culinary experience, visit Alexandra’s restaurant, Ta Nisia tis Panayias. There, while having a wonderful view of the islands of Panayia, you will taste foods satisfying in taste and quantity, with prices being quite high.
