Food

Food in Amsterdam is not an easy business! You have to try really hard to find something that is both tasty and reasonably priced! Their cuisine, unimpressive in tastes, is based on products like potatoes, cheese and dough. The price for dining in a restaurant ranges between 30 and 50€ (without wine) and 40-70€ (with wine) per person. But, there is also the option of street food, offering a variety of fast and cheap choices. You can choose among doner or other sandwiches, French fries, sausages, fried fish, as well as various small snacks, having dough as their base product. You should know that you will find the most decent food in shops that are not located on central streets. Don’t forget that you are in the Netherlands, so try tastes that you won’t find anywhere else!

Bazar

The restaurant got its name after the outdoor bazaar that is set daily in front of it. It is located way outside the city center, close to the Heineken Experience. It is a two-story restaurant with a friendly atmosphere and pretty Eastern-Oriental interior décor. The menu offers a vast variety of tasty meals and desserts, really reasonably priced. Service is good, but a little unenthusiastic. Of course, this is no problem at all, as everything in there happens in a leisurely fashion. Booking a table is necessary, as it is almost always full! Get your Eastern rhythm on for good, dining under the ceiling filled with colorful little lights! Recommended (R)

Bickers aan de Werf

If you want to get away from the trivial tourist shops, then Raymond and Danielle’s restaurant is the ideal choice. The secret lies in its location, as it is outside the city center, away from the tourist pathways, making it a quiet hangout place for locals. Its interior is very warm and welcoming, embracing the visitor from the very start, while the owners dedicate body and soul in order to get the best possible result. The options for food might not be many, but their dishes are great in quality and satisfying in portions. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the shop has an exquisite balcony in front of the canal, where you can relax while drinking your wine. Recommended (R)

We recommend you to try: The beloved…chocolate cake!

Doner Time

Doner is a popular and inexpensive choice of food in Amsterdam. For 5-10€ per person, including soft drinks, you can have a filling meal, in one of the numerous doner shops in the city.

a) Leeman Doner

It’s truly worth visiting the best doner shop in Amsterdam! With their really low prices and great product quality, Leeman Doner is guaranteed to satisfy your appetite! The food is so delicious that it will certainly take your mind off of the old and untended decorations. We suggest that you try their chicken doner sandwich, which is simply divine, and we’ve only tried anything like it in Istanbul! It is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a filling and, at the same time, inexpensive meal. Highly Recommended (H)

b) Sefa Grill

This doner shop is not popular with tourists and we stumbled upon it while leaving the Anne Frank House. It was a great choice, for the quick bite that we wanted to have, both for the good quality and their prices. They charge the use of restrooms for non-customers! Good Choice (G)

Street Fries

French fries are one of the Dutch’s daily snacks, so we tried them out and give you the verdict for this unhealthy habit.

a) Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx:
A small shop in the city center, which is not easy to spot. Don’t worry though, because the smell of fries and the long customer line will lead you right to it! Their fries are hand-made, delicious and come with a variety of sauces. The fact that people wait in line even before it opens really says something, but, trust us, the wait is totally worth it! Service is pretty quick, considering the crowds that they have to serve, while prices are a bit steep. The small cone costs 2.10€, medium is at 2.70€ and the large one at 4.10€. Recommended (R)

Total score:8

b) Chipsy King:
This shop offers decent fries, okay in quality and enticing prices. It’s worth mentioning that there are three shops in the city center, in which you can give them a try, in case you come across one of them. We can’t say that we were particularly delighted, but we were not disappointed, either! The small cone costs 2€, medium is at 2.60€ and the large one at 3.50€. Meh (M)

Total score:6.8

c) Manneken Pis:
Manneken Pis is the most central shop for French fries in the city and they self-advertise as No.1 in the Netherlands. This may be true when it comes to customer traffic, but it is most certainly not the best in quality and prices. On the contrary, actually! Their fries are standard, sometimes cold and others burnt! And prices are unreasonably high. The small cone costs 3€, medium is at 4€ and the large one at 5€. Pass (P)

Poffertjes

Poffertjes are a Dutch dessert/snack absolutely worth trying! They are small juicy pancakes in servings of 10, 20 or 30 pieces, served with butter, powdered sugar, Nutella, various syrups, honey, season fruits and several other garnishes! Ever since we tried this Dutch, culinary masterpiece, we haven’t stopped eating it in any city we can find it (Berlin, Prague)! With the price being around 2€ for 10 pieces, 4€ for 20 pieces and 5€ for 30 pieces (with butter and powdered sugar), it will surely become your…sweet habit, as well! Try them wherever you can find them, from various cafés to street stands! Highly Recommended (H)

Breakfast

De laatste Kruimel

The most original home-made breakfast in Amsterdam can be found in the heart of the city! This shop offers a vast variety of fresh, home-made delicacies, like tarts, salty and sweet pies, Quiche Lorraine, croissants, sandwiches, cookies, coffees, juices and anything else you can imagine! Its decoration is plain, filled with wooden features and the atmosphere is warm and cozy. The small balcony on its back side is the perfect spot for you to enjoy your breakfast, accompanied by the romantic and delightful view of the canal! Even though it attracts lots of tourists, their quality and level of service are great, while prices have remained reasonable. Try to get as many products as possible, either to enjoy there or to go! Highly Recommended (H)

Studio 2

While taking a walk in the Flower Market, we found ourselves outside this charming corner store. It is located in Amsterdam’s well-known Jordaan neighborhood and its interior space is warm and welcoming. A place where you can enjoy your coffee, dessert or breakfast. Also, the staff is very polite, patient and ready to attend to your needs. Choose a table by the window, so you can gaze at the market’s passers-by. It’s worth trying their full-of-calories pancakes, which are fresh and very tasty! Recommended (R)
